while I was an elder I was convinced the majority were spirit directed - Jack Daniels, Johnnie Walker and Jim Beam were all part of our BOE.

Hypocrisy 101 - Watchtower has Payed for College/College Courses for Bethelites!
by Crisis of Conscience inno you did not read the title wrong.
i was out to eat this weekend with two bethelites.
one gave a talk in my hall and i was invited out to dinner with them by another family in my hall.. as the conversation always turns to "spiritual" things, the subject of education was brought up.

Bethelite in the 80's at the Halton Hills Country Club in Canada went to university and took law. Worked alongside Glenn Howe, can't remember his name but pretty well full of himself AFTER going to University - see it makes you a bad person..

AudeSapere: YES!!! only it was Saturday mornings, Sundays and Wednesdays. It took me a good 6 months to stop the delay in my response "wait a minute, I have a committment on Wednesday night so..." thinking. Next step is to take all the suits I still ahve in the closet to the Salvation Army
Cheers to all!!

Looks like a reprint of the last one I attended. Anything startling and new or just same faces (just older) saying the same stuff

Was Frosty the Snowman possessed by demons?
by keyser soze inif not, where does his power come from?
why does he come to life and start to dance around when they place a hat on his head?
it's eerily similar to the scene in "the exorcist", when linda blair's head spins around.. at the very least the story is creepy.

Examples of how indoctrination, belief, cognitive dissonance, and confirmation bias work with cult members
by Mad Sweeney inconfirmation bias and cognitive dissonance have been discussed here and elsewhere quite a lot (if you're unfamiliar, google them).
we all use confirmation bias to some extent to reaffirm ourselves and our beliefs, and cognitive dissonance is something we all have to deal with, but cult members who have been indoctrinated with thought-reform (aka mind control) techniques display these in predictable ways when you know what you're looking for.. below are two scenarios and a cult member's interpretation of the events.
notice the belief that the cult is "the truth" is always reinforced by the member's interpretation of events, even when those events seem to be totally opposite.. scenario one.

Birthdays not mentioned in the new elder's handbook
by Robert7 ini just noticed this today when i was replying to another thread.
the new elders handbook doesn't even mention the word birthday, even though there's a big detailed chapter on offences requiring a judicial committee.. is it possible that celebrating birthdays is officially, according to the 'law', allowed?
i can see this being the case, where technically you're allowed to, but you would just get judged like crazy..

Is it possible they are quietly seeing the "Lightâ„¢" on the fact that most bible experts believe Job and his family celebrated their birthdays? As often stated, if the two instances (bad things + birthdays = bad) in the bible involved a wedding anniversary would they not celebrate anniversaries? What if it occured at a wedding feast would dubs have a quick ceremony at the KH and then off for some quick consumation and a post-coital bag of chips and beer from the liquor bar?
I kick myself for being so stupid 25 years ago - If only the internet were around then....

WT Study Version Feb 2011 - Double Standard?
by Simon Morley indid anyone find the illustration on page 26 odd?
i surmised for a moment that perhaps the "brother" in the illustration was an elder and he prayed about an employment issue - we all know what he will do.
yet, would that same elder make the same pryerful decision when it came to selling a kingdom hall to say the same church and say no?

Yet, would that same elder make the same pryerful decision when it came to selling a kingdom hall to say the same church and say no?
I find this wholly riduculous that on one hand a person has to provide for his family, may have limited income, and yet God would be very unhappy if he painted the church but on the other hand he smiles when some BOE rips off a church by selling them an overpriced, shoddily built outhouse?
I also wondered if the whole employment issue was back on the burners again. I recall that there was a distinction between if you were or were not in control of what contracts you took on. if you go out and secure a painting cantract for a church, that is different to being an employee where is is part of your employment contract?
